Swainson’s lorikeet chick

This rather ugly looking chick is a three week old Swainson’s lorikeet. However, when it leaves the nest in a few weeks time it will be one of the most colorful birds at the nature centre. Swainson’s are one of around 20 sub-species of rainbow lorikeet and as you can see from the pictures below the adults certainly live up to their name.

Our pair of lorikeets breed consistently and last year we sent three chicks to Banham Zoo, where they have joined a large flock in a walk through exhibit.
