Dead Leaf Mantids

On display in the Discovery Room are some young dead leaf mantids (Deroplatys desiccata). They use their camouflage to ambush passing insects which are caught in their barbed front legs. At the moment they only measure about 1cm and are feeding on fruit flies but they grow quickly and the females will eventually reach 8cm long.
