Magpies get their rings

Today we caught the four azure-winged magpie chicks up today for ringing. Each bird was fitted with a ring with its own code so we can tell the chicks apart, as they will all look very similar in a few weeks time.

It is generally easier to ring the chicks while they are still in the nest but as it was their parents’ first effort at breeding we didn’t want to disturb them too much. Also, many birds can sometimes see the ring as an object that shouldn’t be in the nest and so try to throw it out which is obviously not good news for the chick wearing the ring.
