Spiny-tailed Lizards

Recent arrivals arrivals in the Discovery Room are Moroccan spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastyx acanthinurus). These reptiles are found in the arid habitats of North Africa. They spend the night in burrows and emerge during the day to bask; this is a species that loves high temperatures.

Their bulky, spiked tails can be whipped around quickly to drive off predators.

Despite their rather fearsome appearance they are largely herbivorous.
