Hooded Merganser

Drake hooded mergansers in their breeding plumage are always popular with visitors. The males spend most of the winter using their crests to display to the females.

The long, narrow beaks of these North American ducks are line with serrations which helps them hold onto the small animals they dive to catch.

They likes to lay their suprisingly large and round eggs in tree hollows.

  1. We are seeing Hooded Mergansers in the Cocheco River in Dover, NH right now. Very cool looking bird, and what great swimmers!
