A Gruesome Defence

The Spanish ribbed newt has an unusual defence; when threatened they are able to force their ribs out their sides. They are one of Europe’s biggest amphibians, reaching 30cm in length.

They feed on aquatic insects and unlike our native newts they rarely leave the water.

Only found in Spain, Portugal and Morocco they are listed as a near-threatened species due to habitat loss.
