Himalayan Monal

The amazing metallic plumage of the male Himalayan monals makes them  amongst the most colourful of all pheasants.

As their name suggests they are a bird of the mountains, spending the breeding season on the grassy slopes above the tree line and returning to the shelter of the forests for the winter.

Like our eared pheasants they use their powerful beak to dig for seeds, tubers and insects.

They are bold birds and the female will happily take treats, such as peanuts, from the hand.
