Red-crested pochard

The main populations of Red-crested pochard are found around the Black Sea, there are small numbers breeding in western Europe. A small number over-winter in England and a few pairs also breed here.

Like the related rosybills they largely feed on aquatic plants which they obtain by upending and occasionally diving. As part of their display drakes will present their mates with treats such as pondweed, the only ducks to do so.
