Fulvous whistling ducks have a wide distribution that includes South America, Africa and India. They are generally found in small flocks and communicate with whistle-like calls, hence their name.
Unlike most species of duck the male plays a full role in incubating the eggs and rearing the ducklings.
They feed largely on plants and seeds. One of their favourite foods is rice which often brings them into conflict with farmers.
Whistling ducks are able to dive well and ours can often be seen diving to search for the millet seed that we mix with their waterfowl pellets when they are fed.
