Mexican Red-kneed Tarantula

Mexican red-kneed tarantula

These colourful spiders are ony found in Mexico and they are a listed as a near-threatened species. For a long time they were collected in large numbers for the pet trade, this is now regulated and the major threat is habitat loss.

They take several years to reach breeding size but once the male tarantula matures he will live for less than a year; in contrast the female can live to be well over twenty.

Our female can be seen in the Discovery Room.
