Java Sparrow

Java sparrow

Originally from the islands of Java and Bali Java sparrows now live wild in many countries including the USA and Australia after deliberate introductions or the escape of pet birds. There may well be more birds in these feral populations than in their homeland.

Also known as rice birds as they often feed on seeds in the paddy fields they are listed as a vulnerable species due to a capture for the cage bird trade and hunting.

Our colony spend the summer in the walled garden aviary where they breed readily, laying up to 8 eggs in a clutch.
