Common Pochard

Drake common pochard

Common pochard dive to feed on plants, seeds and insects. They are a species that breeds in Britain in reasonable numbers but this population is boosted by thousands of ducks that migrate here mainland Europe and Russia for the winter.

While the male has a striking grey and black body and red-head, the female is largely brown so she is well camouflaged when incubating.

As well as our captive birds a few wild pochard over winter on the park’s lakes and males can regularly be seen on the main lake.
