Plecostomus

Plecostomus

There are a large number of catfish species that are referred to as Plecostomus or plecos for short. These popular aquarium fish can reach over 2 feet in length depending on the species.

They inhabit the rivers of South and Central America. Probably their most notable feature is the specially adapted mouth that allows them to  ttach themselves to rocks in fast flowing water and to rasp algae from leaves and stones. In addition to algae these nocturnal animals feed on plants, insects and even wood.
