Yellow Mongoose

Yellow mongooseI thought I’d post some pictures of our stunning and very curious yellow mongooses. Above is the male, Bob, he was bred at Dudley Zoo and is 8 years old. Below is his mate, Bernie, at 14 she is a real pensioner in mongoose terms.

Bernie the yellow mongooseSince they were introduced to each other last year they have become inseparable and can often be seen grooming one another.

These mongooses are from southern Africa where they live in small family groups. Most active at dawn and dusk, they spend the night underground in burrows which they often share with other animals, including meerkats.

They eat a varied diet that includes insects, reptiles, small mammals and eggs, which they break by throwing them between their back legs onto rocks.
